Hello, my name is Luke Askins. I am a senior at Tamkang University in Tamsui, Taiwan studying Global Affairs, with a concentration in Sino-U.S. relations. As an American student who has dedicated efforts to study in both the U.S. and Asia, I enjoy a unique perspective of global affairs. The first time I had the opportunity to live abroad and apply my language skills was my junior year of high school living with a host family in Beijing.Similarly impactful, the summer before my Sophomore year of college, I decided to begin tutoring as a way to further engage the Taiwanese community that has been so welcoming to me. Although my students and I do not address global affairs, the personal connections made in these tutoring sessions have provided an interpersonal exchange that ventures beyond my planned curriculum.These two experiences have been vital in the ways I perceive the world and have particularly caused me to reflect on my own contributions as a global citizen. Building personal relationships through travel has informed and inspired my devotion to seek a higher standard of living for all people. With a critical eye adopted through my international experiences, I hope to create a more sustainable future.
