My name is Luke Baker, I am a 29-year-old English teacher, who has a passion for the subject and teaching. In 2019, I graduated from UNISA with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education – Senior Phase and Further Education and Training with a distinction. Before this I received my Bachelor of Arts with Distinction, majoring in English and Communication at Varsity College. I have been working with school children for the last 10 years. This has ranged from ages 5-19. In my first year out of school, I worked at a boarding school in England for a year, (Sandroyd School) as a boarder master. Duties included: administrative assistant, sports coach, cultural activities assistant, teacher’s assistant, and being responsible for the students on school trips and school activities. It was after this enlightening year at Sandroyd that I decided I wanted to pursue a career in teaching. I was a sports coach at Thomas More College in Durban for 6 years as well as completing my PGCE practicals here. I coached soccer in the high school and tennis in the primary school. I coached up to a first team level on both occasions, coaching both girls and boy’s tennis and soccer teams. Besides soccer and tennis, I am also very knowledgeable in other sporting codes, such as: hockey, golf, cricket and flyfishing. I am a driven individual that likes to see and help others achieve to their potential; I get genuinely enthusiastic and proud when the people that I coach or teach excel and improve. I am very patient and hardworking and always eager to learn more and continue to improve. After graduating in 2019, 2020 was a Covid interrupted year. I taught extra lessons online as well as other part time work. I also received my Level 1 coaching qualification qualification from the English Football Association.2021: I worked at Curro Hillcrest High School, teaching English (Grade 8,9,10)2022: I moved to Cape Town and started working at Parklands College, teaching English (Grade 7,9,11,12) and Life Orientation (Grade 11) 2023: Parklands College. Teaching English (Grade 7,8,10,11) English coordinator - Grade11. Life Orientation (Grade 12) Grade Head - Grade 7 Head of Houses.
