I’ve been building better business software for over two decades. Integrations are a big part of that, whether it’s importing/exporting data, consolidating data in the cloud, or sharing information with other systems through custom APIs. This is my favorite kind of work.Maintainability is the virtue I hold highest when it comes to software. That requires a proper modular architecture, well-linted code, disciplined source control, useful automated tests, and documentation that not only explains what you did, but why you did it. I value peer reviews as opportunities for teaching and shared learning, as well as being the most important exercise a team can have for improving quality and consistency.My favorite language by far right now is JavaScript. JavaScript is in every web client. With Node.js, JavaScript can be in every web server too. This makes it perfect for web integrations. It’s also open source, which makes it even more attractive to me. I enjoy full-time employment that allows me to use JavaScript to improve our world.I’ve capably worked from home for every employer in my career, long before the pandemic, and I prefer this. I can coordinate with team members around the globe, be available when I’m needed, and be more productive and happy without the distractions of an office or the stress of a commute.I’ve practiced Agile, Waterfall, and less-disciplined development methodologies over the years. The most important thing is being close to the customer, understanding his or her needs, and distilling clear, justified requirements from them. I love being part of a group that’s good at this.
