Designing and building has been a lifelong hobby for me. When I was young I fixed cars, built bikes and took apart anything I could get my hands on. After high school I joined the Marine Corps, and traveled the world while learning about people, cultures, and classified networking. While I was finishing up my contract time I came to the realization that engineering was what I was meant to do, and after the contract was up I was going to go to school in order to pursue engineering. When I finished my contract I came back to Colorado and began schooling under the GI Bill. School was different than the military, but it was a refreshing change. Being able to discuss things with other people that had similar ideas and aspirations as me was a refreshing change from the military. Unfortunately, this just meant the ideas just got larger and more elaborate. After a year in school, and meeting a great group of people, we decided that for out capstone project we wanted to build a rocket. This defined the next three years of my life as we began to plan the project.Starting with Estes kits and moving up rapidly in size, we soon launched our fist high powered rockets to 3000 ft. Starting from nothing was a challenge, but through research, and a great network of experienced, and knowledgeable rocketeers we were able to learn about, and launch many rockets. We kept moving forward, and this culminated in a launch during September 2019 where we flew a rocket to 35,300’ agl. Unfortunately, the launch to 35,000 was the final rocket of senior design due to the COVID-19 situation, but as soon as possible we plan on launching our senior design rocket to over 60,000ft and 2300 mph. During senior design I have learned an incredible amount about the real world design and implementation. Computer design is the tools that many engineers use today, but the real world is an invaluable testing environment and during this project I have learned that. I look forward to applying both the knowledge that I have gained from textbooks, and the knowledge I have gained from this design project to work towards a larger project that brings value to the world.
