About Luke Markey
After college I was lucky enough to obtain a great position at Deloitte in their Forensic and Dispute Services function. I was promptly sent on assignment and for the next two and a half years I traveled around the country working as a consultant for Fortune 500 companies. Nearing the end of my time at Deloitte I spent a lot of time reflecting as to whether this life was for me and eventually I decided to quit. I wasn't sure what my passion was; but Deloitte certainly wasn't it. I decided to move home and study under my father as a blacksmith. Everyone regrets not spending enough time with their parents and I didn't want that to happen to me. Things with an expiration have to be done first. I went from platinum status at SPG and first class on United Airlines to living with my parents in my childhood bedroom. Everyone questioned my decision even if they told me they were proud that I was following my dream. Telling people you quit being a consultant to work with your hands is extremely odd to people and dealing with the looks on their faces was a task in itself. You derive a lot of self confidence from your occupation and people seem to equate someone's self worth with their salary. I had saved a lot at Deloitte but with no salary, and no hopes of immediate income, people dismissed me early and often. If it wasn't for my closest friends and my extremely supportive family, I wouldn't have lasted long in my new career. But - with my brother's confidence in my ability we formed ShieldCo. We are using all of our experiences and skills to make ShieldCo the best that it can be and to hopefully make it a household name. While we aren't there yet - as some people say "the trip is sometimes better than the destination."
