About Luke Millard

As Professor of Student Development my focus is on how we build a University and programmes that enable our students to achieve their full potential. This sees a focus on activities that promote student progression and the aligned relationship of how we empower staff to improve their learning, teaching and assessment design so that they can release their students' potential. A core foundation of this is the generation of partnerships within, through Abertay students and staff, and outwith through collaborations with universities and employers across the world. Please contact me if you wish to be part of this approach.Research and publications focus upon student transitions and student engagement and recent activities have seen me exploring key aspects of the student journey from the first year student experience into enabling students to define their expectations of success through effective integration of diagnostics and microcredentials. In 2017, I was honoured to Chair the 11th European First Year Experience conference and intend to support the development of this influential movement over the coming years. I am also a member of the International Advisory Group for the International Journal of Students as Partners (IJSaP), https://mulpress.mcmaster.ca/ijsap/index

As Head of Student Engagement I seek to better understand the student experience at the University. I co-ordinate activities around the collection of data including students surveys (NSS, PTES and UKES) and centralised module evaluation and work with colleagues to help inform learning and teaching practice. In addition, I seek to develop academic partnerships with those organisations that can enrich student learning at the University. The partners can be local or global as we attempt to build the vibrant learning community to which we aspire.A particular area of interest is the first year experience and student transition into and through university. Creating a better understanding of student motivations and attitudes to learning is key as we seek to improve the student experience. My professional doctorate involves research into how student employment may impact on student learning habits. Our key partners are students and the Students' Union and through the Student Academic Partners (SAP) Scheme we have created a unique way in which to empower students to influence curriculum change. In 2010 the SAP scheme won the Times Higher Education (THE) award for outstanding support for students and we have now employed over 1200 students on projects in the past five years. Partnership developments have seen us work with California State University, Copenhagen Business School, Higher Education Academy, Leadership Foundation, Northwest Missouri State University, University of Ulster, University of Dundee, University of Pittsburgh, National University of Ireland, Galway and Birmingham City Student's Union.
