I worked as a graduate research assistant on a project evaluating the impacts of the rapid rollout of active transportation facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to the pandemic, cities around the country have been praised for reducing both the costs and timelines of these interventions. Conversely, these cities have also been criticized for hastily implementing projects that raise concerns about their safety, equity, and sustainability. Utilizing a mobility justice framework, this project explored the costs and benefits of these rapid rollout "COVID Streets". Additionally, the study identified features which may translate to the quicker and more affordable implementation of safe active transportation facilities in the wake of COVID-19. Tasks:- Review and summarize existing literature on rapid rollout infrastructure (both prior to and during COVID-19)- Identify treatment/control study cities and characterize their rapid rollout mobility infrastructure- Develop interview instruments and identify interview subjects

• Participated in existing conditions GIS analysis, report writing, and scenario planning workshops for Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) updates for the Anchorage, AK and Billings, MT MPOs• Assisted in all phases of traffic impact analysis (TIAs) including report writing, calculating ITE trip generation volumes, and evaluating impact of new development on the transportation network• Developed three reports assessing the need for improved pedestrian crossing facilities by evaluating existing conditions, conducting a site visit, and following NCHRP 562 and FHWA guidance on improving pedestrian safety at uncontrolled crossing locations

As a Research Assistant I participated in carrying out multiple research projects. While working on these projects I played a role in literature reviews, developing methodology, data collection, data cleaning, and manuscript development. I was primarily involved with two key projects. First, I performed a literature review, collected data, and participated in manuscript development for a project evaluating the rhetoric broadcast media utilizes when reporting on pedestrian and bicycle crashes. Second, I assisted in the development of a database which highlights measures cities have taken to encourage social distancing of pedestrians and bicyclists during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Raleigh, North Carolina

I worked in the Basin Planning Branch of the Division of Water Resources to develop ESRI Story Maps for North Carolina’s 17 river basins. These Story Maps act as an interactive tool to display key water quality and quantity data. I also participated in an atmospheric deposition GIS analysis for the Neuse River Basin. This analysis highlighted emissions which are making significant impacts on water quality throughout the Neuse River.

Carrboro, North Carolina

I assisted the Town of Carrboro Stormwater staff in researching urban forestry and stormwater connections. In doing so, I verified and updated existing street tree inventory with identified specimens in Downtown Carrboro. Outreach material was presented to Town of Carrboro businesses and residents related to the monetary benefits that urban forestry can provide.

San Cristobal Island, Galapagos Archipelago, Ecuador

I was a research assistant to Professor Diego Riveros-Iregui of the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Geography in collecting ecohydrological data in the highlands of San Cristobal Island. I utilized a CO2 Concentration Probe to characterize soil conditions and a pressure chamber to measure plant-water potential of endemic, native, and invasive plant species. Upon completion of the project, data was cleaned and presented at a symposium.

I was a research assistant to Professor William Vizuete of the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering in collecting natural and anthropogenic aerosols. Indoor and outdoor laboratory work included swapping, weighing, and freezing aerosol collection filters.
