During my second year as an intern at QTS in Hillsboro, I had the opportunity to work on a $30 million project that included three nearly identical data centers. My main objectives were to learn as much as possible and contribute more significantly to the project's success.My daily tasks were focused on project management, including labor, equipment, and material tracking. I dove right into these tasks from the first day, using various methods and tools to track different aspects of the project.For labor tracking, I used a 'Burn Vs Budget' analysis, comparing actual labor hours used against those predicted. It helped identify discrepancies and allowed us to make necessary adjustments in a timely manner.When it came to equipment tracking, I leveraged CSV queries to provide a detailed overview of all non-labor costs, breaking them down by phase code, cost type, and month. This information offered a clear insight into our monthly expenses and helped us manage costs more efficiently.As for material tracking, I devised a new system that divided material expenses into three main categories: ordered, paid, and received. This system ensured fiscal responsibility by checking that the amounts paid matched the materials actually received. It also detected any potential shipping issues early on, allowing us to communicate promptly with vendors. Finally, it maintained real-time inventory data, preventing duplicate orders and improving on-site efficiency.Throughout my internship, I've improved my skills in using Excel - Pivot Tables and Queries and connections, and learned to use Microsoft Power Automate, despite the challenges. This experience taught me the importance of maintaining a sense of urgency, mastering task prioritization (which I call the "Minesweeper" strategy), understanding team roles and responsibilities, and the need for standardized training and clear expectations.

I recently concluded an insightful internship at JHKelly where I served as the acting field engineer on a unique 15-story hotel expansion project at the Ilani Casino, in Vancouver. This $16M project presented unique challenges due to its location on a sovereign reservation and the incorporation of bathroom pods.Throughout the internship, I wore many hats - ranging from tracking the project's progress to managing invoices, and from handling key documentation like purchase orders and change orders to coordinating team schedules and tool delivery.One of my main accomplishments was developing an automated tracking system that streamlined data representation for easy interpretation and decision-making. I utilized raw data, feeding it into a dynamic sheet which then auto-calculated progress and provided digestible, visual representations of the data.In parallel to my routine tasks, I led a capstone project, using this tracking system to provide real-time updates of progress, man-hours, and other critical metrics. The ability to pinpoint exact areas of delay allowed us to maintain a steady project flow.Through this experience, I honed my skills in a variety of tools:- **Blue Beam:** Essential for managing, editing, and creating project drawings and documents.- **Excel:** An indispensable tool for organizing and calculating everything on a project.- **Smartsheet:** An interactive platform that enabled smooth scheduling.- **ProjectM:** This all-in-one financial tool was invaluable for managing project costs.- **Navis:** A tool for accessing a detailed model of the job for precise measurements.This internship solidified two key lessons for me. First, the power of direct communication. A well-timed phone call can save hours of back-and-forth emails. Second, organization is paramount to success. Maintaining a clear file system, ensuring no loose ends, and staying on top of communication were all critical aspects of the job.
