I got the job at House of Smith through references and industry contacts and the move to the nightclub has allowed me to flourish in all aspects of my current job role. In addition to set up, serving and managing over 600 guests and closing down the venue, I also run cocktail classes for the company, where I speak and take classes of up to 20 people at one time. I have proven I can work under pressure, both on my own and as part of a team.

After coming back to Newcastle I picked up right where I left off and jumped straight back on the Empourium Bar at the busiest time of the year. I developed further during my time here as I worked through Black eye Friday and worked all the way through until 9am on New Year’s Eve. The challenge of the busy nights and the frantic rush of night time service is one I thrive on and the skills, teamwork and tasks that I have learned and completed have made me a more employable member of staff across any industry or specific company demands.

In September I left Newcastle to pursue my dream of becoming a Royal Marines Commando. Unfortunately I didn’t make the grade and got to week 10 before deciding to take time out and come back to Newcastle. Despite not completing the course, Royal Marine training has made me a better, more employable potential member of staff. I have learnt an extensive amount of transferable skills during training, like timekeeping, standards of dress, respect, urgency and standards of the work I complete. I believe I’m returning to civilian life as a much more competent and useful worker because of my experiences in training.

At the famed Sandhill Quayside site I developed into a competent bartender and I worked alongside a small team which dealt with the demands of customers on the Quayside. I worked with a large cocktail menu and delivered a high standard of service under pressure. Again I worked on busy weekend nights that saw the venue at full capacity along with delivering a good service on quiet industry nights which required me to be approachable and have a good level of banter which kept customers in our bar over going to busier venues. Popolo’s and Empourium advanced my bartending skills no end and allowed me to become more competent, more confident and more able to jump on any bar in the City Centre and work as a functioning member of the team.

During my time at the Antler/Fat Buddha Swan House Roundabout site, I’ve enjoyed a varied time working as a member of the floor and bar staff. The nature of the venue allows me to balance multiple responsibilities in the same shift and I am capable of being tasked with different jobs across different facets of the service environment. In the Buddha we are often dealing with vast volumes of covers and a busy bar. Downstairs in Antler I have been asked to help on a packed bar on busy match days and late night student parties. All of this varied experience has made me adaptable, willing to tackle anything the management team requires of me with a smile on my face and a hands on approach to problem solving and customer services. I’m always working under pressure whether that be in the form of customer volume, difficult circumstances or high standards set by the owner but with the help of my team and by relying on my positive attitude and varied experience I’m able to get the job done. Across the venue we deal with large buffet style events, typical bar/food service and larger events like Subline Wednesdays which run a nightclub style service.
