The group was formed as a short life working group to create a formal process and database to increase the involvement of patients, service users and the public in healthcare education at Cardiff University, as a part of HCPC re-validation. The PPI group was formed of a mix of educators, researchers, patients/public and external stakeholders from other organisations such as the MS Society, with myself as the only student representative. My involvement with the group was to provide a student perspective on the importance of PPI involvement in healthcare education, along with my experiences of the existing format of PPI within the current curriculum. My involvement lasted around 8 months, during which I attended monthly meetings with the group. Unfortunately, I had to voluntarily cease involvement in November 2017 due to the increase in academic pressures of the final year of my physiotherapy degree, but I maintain a strong interest in the role of the patients and the public in healthcare education. We meet three times a year within our student region, the South West and Wales. I also regularly attend CSP Welsh Board meetings, which are attended by qualified physiotherapists who are CSP representatives, stewards, CSP staff amongst others. In my second year of university, I took on the additional responsibility of becoming Wales Representative to the CSP Student Executive Committee - a committee of 16 student representatives that represent the 6,500 physiotherapy students in the UK to the CSP. My role is to ensure the interests of physiotherapy students in Wales are represented on a UK wide platform, as well as at CSP Welsh Board meetings. Within this role, I have also been involved in the CSP consultation over the changes to the NHS bursary in Wales. I was re-elected into this role for my final year studying physiotherapy, and will remain in post until I graduate. For the 2017/18 session of the CSP Student Executive Committee (SEC) I was elected as chair. This leaves me responsible for chairing meetings of the SEC and liaising with CSP staff regarding matters pertinent to the committee and therefore the wider student body. During this session of the SEC, we have been responsible for co-designing a change process, altering the way CSP membership works for students and thus impacting on the 6,500 physiotherapy students in the UK. This change process comes following a structure that has remained largely unchanged for 15 years, and is being led by the ideas of the Student Executive Committee. My role as chair has developed to include liaising with multiple CSP staff regarding the changes, forming a reliable link between the CSP staff and the SEC. Show less -
