About Luke Van Tol
Luke van Tol is a landscape architect and urban designer, with a background in architecture. His professional pursuits demonstrate a passion for landscape design for both its ecological and programmatic performance in the public realm. His work explores how design should reflect the diversity of its users, with a particular focus on representation and public engagement. He has extensive experience coordinating complex public realm projects involving transdisciplinary teams, excelling in the communication across disciplines to deliver a synthesized final vision through to construction.Currently, having recently moved to Vancouver, he is an adjunct instructor at the University of British Columbia and is co-teaching a 2nd year Masters of Landscape Architecture Studio focusing on the regional scale.Most recently Luke was a landscape architect at PUBLIC WORK in Toronto. He was a core team member for the landscape design of Queens Quay East-Cherry Street, an extension of one of downtown Toronto’s main streets and the primary public realm linking its Waterfront. He was also a core team member of University Park in Toronto. His other contributions included: the landscape design and construction for Indigenous House/Gathering Circle and the project lead for the Science Wing Quad at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough Campus and Detroit’s Capitol Park. He was also an integral part of the winning design team for the new Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax. His ability to use his skills in solving technical challenges was essential for the construction of CIBC’s SkyPark at 141 Bay Street and CASA II and III in Toronto.Prior to joining PUBLIC WORK, Luke worked as a landscape designer at the OLIN Studio in Philadelphia, where he was involved in a variety of projects ranging in both scale and location. Through his internship experience at KPMB Architects he was part of the winning design team for Toronto’s Jack Layton Ferry Terminal. Luke holds a master’s degree in landscape architecture and regional planning from the University of Pennsylvania and is a recipient of the Ian L. McHarg Prize and ASLA Merit Award.
