Leeds, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Working in partnership with Local Authorities and businesses across the Leeds City Region, I helped to develop projects and programmes to accelerate the Leeds City Region's transition to a low carbon economy, in line with the Strategic Economic Plan. This involved working with a range of internal and external stakeholders from local authority officers up to Chief Executives. Working in the policy and strategy directorate, my main role was project managing the development of the Energy Accelerator. This was an innovative programme designed to help low carbon and energy efficient projects become a reality where they may otherwise not have been completed due to a lack of capacity, expertise and funding. This involved me leading on a successful funding application to the European Investment Bank.
Kampala
I worked for Living Earth Foundation in support of their Jobs and Oil project (DFID and EU funded) helping to address the poverty situation in Western Uganda where oil has recently been discovered. With a focus on women and youth the project aimed to build capacity of the local communities by improving their access to employment and skills training. It also helped to minimise the negative social and environmental impacts of the oil industry by ensuring residents were involved fully in the decision making process. My role focused on high level stakeholder engagement (including development partners/donors and international oil companies) as well as seeking out and developing new project opportunities.I also provided environmental and technical advisory services to a Ugandan/British renewable energy company called Mandulis Energy, including project development and grant proposal writing. I supported the development of off-grid, decentralised renewable energy projects using biomass gasification technology fed by agricultural waste. The company aimed to provide affordable, modern energy solutions to marginalised communities in rural Uganda as well as industrial and institutional customers.I also wrote a four part series for Oil In Uganda (ActionAid Uganda) exploring the potential of a civil nuclear industry following discoveries of uranium in the country. Working closely with the Kuala Lumpur Climate Change and Energy Attche I have developed a good knowledge of the UNFCCC negotiations and also palm oil, forestry and illegal wildlife trade in Southeast Asia. I also worked closely with UK Trade and Investment as Project Manager for a green building/low carbon trade mission to Malaysia involving more than 20 UK companies and worked with the political section monitoring the elections in Malaysia in 2013. Transferable skills include project management, knowledge of procurement systems, event planning/marketing, report writing, economic modelling and dealing with external consultants, government, NGOs and civil society. Sprigfields Fuels Ltd, Preston
I gained much experience in this time including working with an Environmental Management System (ISO 14001), regulatory compliance/liaison, environmental monitoring and incident/emergency response. I gained knowledge and experience of a range of regulations which a big industrial (nuclear) site must comply with such as the Environmental Permitting Regulations, Oil Storage Regulations, Solvent Emissions Directive, Packaging Waste Regulations and more. My duties included data manipulation/reporting, report writing including Best Available Technique and Best Practicable Environmental Option studies as required by the Environment Agency, internal environmental auditing, waste minimisation and raw material usage audits, energy & water minimisation audits, HAZOP studies, biodiversity management including ecological surveys, environmental awareness training and communications and general environmental advise/support to plant operators/engineers including incident response. I also gained significant (mainly radiological) safety experience.
