Principal advisor to the Chief Executive Cyclone Recovery. Led strategic communications (media affairs, external relations, and ministerial priorities) for the Cyclone Recovery Unit, a specialist group established in March 2023 to lead the Government’s recovery programme following Cyclone Gabrielle. This large-scale event – which claimed 11 lives and displaced nearly 11,000 people – marked the worst storm to hit New Zealand this century, costing an estimated $14.5 billion.

This senior role was focused on establishing the communications functions for this new agency, following the merger of New Zealand’s 20 separate District Health Boards into one national health service in July 2022. This included developing new systems and processes, supporting a new chief executive, and inducting a new team during a period of significant structural change, public attention, and media scrutiny. Health New Zealand is the largest single employer in the country, made up of about 220,000 professionals who work directly or indirectly for the national health service.

This senior role worked closely with the Prime Minister's Office to orchestrate the preparation for, and delivery of, daily COVID-19 press conferences, which became the New Zealand public’s most trusted source of information during the pandemic and delivered key public health guidance. Regularly advised the Prime Minister’s office on the development of key messaging and briefed journalists on the Government’s health priorities.
