I am a neuroscientist, drug developer and biomedical research industry professional. In my current role, I lead scientific operations for the Allen Institute for Brain Science. My job is at the interface of science and business, as I play a critical role in driving the Institute's large scale pipeline projects as part of our Big Science, Team Science, Open Science approach. Brain-map.org and alleninstitute.org describe in detail the cutting edge cellular and systems neuroscience that we do as we attempt to answer important outstanding scientific questions about the brain- in both health and disease- and provide publicly availably resources and knowledge to the community.My research has focused on mechanisms of neurodegeneration, with a focus on the roles of protein misfolding and mitochondrial energy metabolism defects. During my 10 years in the biopharmaceutical industry, I focused on drug discovery and development. I have extensive experience in the design of novel, disease-modifying therapeutics for central nervous system disorders and other protein misfolding diseases, with an emphasis on diseases associated with aging. Along with extensive experience with “large market” indications such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, I have expertise with rare “orphan” indications such as AL (light chain) and ATTR (transthyretin) amyloidoses, affecting peripheral organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys. I have carried out leadership roles in the areas of preclinical discovery, assay development and optimization, candidate selection and translational biology. I have been a key player in the implementation of Investigational New Drug (IND) – enabling studies, regulatory document composition and submission. My technical expertise includes protein chemistry, mouse models of neurodegeneration and cell-based assays.
