This position supports the conservation and monitoring of aquatic mollusks, crayfish, and nongame fishes in the New, Savannah, Little Tennessee, Hiwassee, French Broad, and Watauga river basins in North Carolina. The position is responsible for survey and study design, habitat assessments, identification of organisms to species, recording data, database management, and analysis of population status for common, state listed, and federally listed freshwater mussels, fish, crayfish, and aquatic snails. Responsibilities also include providing technical guidance to local, state, and federal governmental agencies, conservation organizations, educational institutions, private landowners, and the general public. Input on federal, state, local, and private projects that may impact listed species is provided by attending on-site meetings and developing written comments.

Primary responsibilities are to coordinate and conduct surveys for nongame aquatic species (nongame fishes, aquatic snails, crayfish, and mussels) within the New, Watauga, French Broad, Savannah, Little Tennessee, and Hiwassee River Basins; to quantitatively monitor priority aquatic communities within these river basins; to develop and conduct conservation actions for priority species; to represent aquatic nongame issues within the Agency's broader conservation programs; to work with the broader conservation community within the basins to achieve aquatic conservation objectives; to provide technical guidance to local, state, and federal governmental agencies, landowners, educational institutions, and conservation organizations; and to provide public outreach.

Primary responsibilities include sampling and identification of non-game fish, crayfish, mussels, and snails in western North Carolina. For fish, I was directly involved in Pigeon River reintroduction project, Sicklefin Redhorse sperm and egg collection and PIT-Tagging, spotfin chub surveys, smoky dace surveys in the Little Tennessee and Hiwassee River basins and fish surveys in the Savannah River basin. For mussels, I was a part of several projects surveying, collecting for propagation, and reintroduction of propagated mussels for Villosa iris, Lampsilis fasciola, Alasmidonta viridis, and Alasmidonta raveneliana.

This position works in the FWCC Habitat Assessment and Restoration Program (HARP) and provides support to each of HARP program areas: Habitat Restoration Coordination, Objective-based Vegetation Management (OBVM), and Wildlife Conservation Prioritization and Recovery (WCPR). Duties will include upload, creation, maintenance, and analysis of GIS data; acting as a GIS resource for agency staff; compiling information necessary for reports; and assisting land managers in their use of the Land Management Information System (LMIS).

Obtained and prepared fish, snail, algae, and water isotope samples; sampled streams forfish, snails, crayfish, mussels, and algae; performed non-fatal tissue collection of mussels,analyzed data using R, Minitab, Canoco, and GIS; evaluated stream habitat (QHEI and sonar).
