Outreach And Widening Participation, University Of Hertfordshire

The main objective is to "help participants (young people aged 11-18) to become fully aware of their capacity to succeed in education, and help them to gain a realistic, but imaginative, insight into the range of opportunities available to them." I and the outreach department work with identified schools across Hertfordshire who may come from an area of low university progression, low income, disadvantage area and as ambassadors we help to support them during activities that can last for a couple of hours to several days. Skills include - A detailed understanding of the University Of Hertfordshire and the student experience - A detailed understanding of the Higher Education sector - Understanding the barriers that prevent students from going to university - Working with young people (DBS checked role) (mainly of secondary school, year 8+) - Working in a team to support each other during the events - Providing guided tours of the university - Being able to talk confidently during the day when answering questions - Team leadership to groups of 10+ young people at onceI also at times assist the Marketing department and work Open days this gives me more skills; - Answering tough questions from parents and possible students - Understanding regulations ie consumer regulations

An elected position representing both Business Tourism Management and International Business Tourism Management for 2 academic years. Run by Hertfordshire Student Union and supported by the Uni. skills include;- Gathering feedback from the cohort - Presenting the feedback to programme or department committee meetings, a formal meeting in a professional environment- Allowing feedback to be everyones views, unbiased and never just an issues i had, but the cohort had- Working with key SU staff and Business school staff to deliver an effective system - Provide detailed feedback to SU staff to develop the rep system for the years to come - Build professional relations with key internal staff at the University including (but not limited to) Lectures, programme leader, SU election officers (mainly VP Democracy and Services and President) - Have an abundance of knowledge about the University in terms of Policies and regulations and general knowledge; email addresses of staff, or who to talk to for deal with specific issues. (This was both aided and help me in the role as Outreach Ambassador) . This allowed me to give correct advice to my cohort when they needed it.
