As a Senior Blockchain Engineer, I helped build an innovative App Chain using the Cosmos SDK. My role was to architect and implement custom modules that introduced on-chain features. A notable achievement was developing a democratic voting system to replace the standard Cosmos SDK's gov module, introducing a weighted one-wallet-one-vote system to ensure fairer governance.I also worked with cross-chain technologies, including IBC and Axelar, to facilitate seamless interoperability between different blockchain ecosystems. I also worked on improving development and testing processes through containerisation, reducing friction for using different validator/node/archive configurations during development.Beyond technical development, I delved into advanced blockchain concepts, such as proof of personhood systems, to enforce a one-human, one-wallet policy. This involved exploring Zero Knowledge proofs and integrating on-chain verifiers as modules.In addition to my development work, I helped recruit and mentor fellow engineers, fostering a culture of learning and innovation. I also assumed the role of Development Manager for a short time, steering the Engineering team through critical phases of our project.

SMART Technologies are world leaders in hardware and software solutions for education and are looking to strengthen their position in the marketplace. SMART’s focus is on building always-available zero-configuration collaboration and teaching systems for educators at all levels.My role is two-fold: to own, build and deliver software services for SMART that will help them achieve their goal of ubiquitous collaboration everywhere, as well as to grow and develop a strong, motivated and knowledgeable team here in Durban, called the SMART Durban team.My team’s work focuses mainly on platform services that are leveraged by the rest of SMART to enable cross-device and cross-OS communication. We have also helped build document processing systems, user authentication and authorisation systems and a number of internal reporting initiatives.Under the hood we work on systems that run on Amazon Web Services (AWS EC2) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP and GAE), with continuous delivery pipelines and automated test suites in place to support multi-stage environments and automated deployments. My engineers are in full control of what they build and ship, making us nimble and agile enough to react to changes and deliver value to customers quickly and often. We mostly use Java, JavaScript, C# and C++ and develop for server environments as well as for iOS, Android and Desktop environments.

My team looks after services and systems that support Microgaming’s mobile gaming offering. The largest of these is the banking and new player registration system which handles deposits and withdrawals via wallets and cards, risk and fraud checks, localisation and geolocation awareness, as well as being adapted to operate in regulated market environments.The customer is the centre of our universe, and as such all my team’s internal development practices and processes are geared toward bringing a delightful experience to our customers in a timeous manner. I’ve implemented a two-week sprint schedule with a staggered two-week release schedule. We use code reviews to ensure quality (review-before-push) and integration tests to catch regressions early.I drive an operations-centric focus within the team with a strong belief in having developers be aware of what their code is doing in production. We have instrumented many different parts of the various services to get a realtime view on errors, business KPIs, customer behaviour, new feature acceptance rates and A/B tests. I had started a metrics initiative within Derivco in about August 2012 using statsd/graphite as the platform, and this continues to pay off for us.My responsibilities include: delivering value to customers quickly while maintaining a high quality bar, interviewing and hiring new talent, encouraging an operations-focus by having each team member take turns in supporting our systems, growing existing talent through goal-driven development, evaluating service performance and feeding those KPIs up the chain, contributing to the design and development of new features while instilling a culture of ownership in my team and lastly evaluating current and future needs and translating that into a feature roadmap. I also participate in developing features and fixing bugs so that I can stay in touch with what’s happening inside each product.

The Mobile Services team provides supporting systems for Microgaming’s mobile gaming offering. The core services are banking and new player registration. Other services include device detection, device messaging and more. The banking service handles card and wallet purchases, money out, risk, new customer registrations and other account-related features.My responsibilities included developing new features, supporting the existing system through the use of an extensive realtime metrics dashboard (something that I launched within the company as an initiative to improve service awareness), adhering to the coding practices we put in place such as code reviews, integration testing, roadmap visibility. Most of my work is done in c# (60%) followed by Javascript, html5 and CSS (35%) and lastly Actionscript (5%).

Web application development using HTML5, JavaScript and CSS on a rich management application used by Amazon's customers. Development of features for new products as well as do fixes and improvements based on customer feedback.

I ran a distributed team that delivered a web-based business intelligence system and a streamlined player-focused helpdesk application.The helpdesk application was a thick-client written in WinForms and used lazy-loading and summary tables to provide a faster user experience.The business intelligence system enabled casino operators to slice and dice their data using an asp.net web application. The front-end was written using ExtJS and DevExpress pivot components. The data was read from highly summarised SQL Server tables after being processed through a home-grown ETL system.My team comprised of developers, quality assurers, a database developer, a front-end specialist and a business analyst. The team was spread over three timezones which made communication and coordination interesting.
