Most cultural change efforts get the arrow of action wrong. Don't start with the target of "culture change". Start creating structure so people know how to work, feel accountable and see improvement opportunities, and then begin to demonstrate leadership. The effort is applied top down, but the results happen bottom up and middle out.My interests have always been drawn to manufacturing companies and systems directly connecting production with the market. Although I think about and enjoy evaluating business systems and dynamics in any context, the specific needs, challenges, opportunities, and people in manufacturing are in my blood.I see massive opportunity for companies that are truly customer driven, people oriented, continuous improvement machines. These three principles have not changed despite the various flavor of the year buzzwords – what has changed is how we unite them to create a high functioning enterprise, supported by enabling technology, organized by people who are empowered to create results.Lean manufacturing is the best known phrase capturing that essence, but a legacy of misunderstanding, bad execution, and narrow vision have clouded this good idea with negativity.
