About Lucía Umeki-Martínez
Hello! My name is Lucía and I'm a third-year student pursuing a Sociology major with a minor in Chicanx Latinx Studies at UC Berkeley. I'm passionate about writing and community. I've combined those two passions of mine at The Daily Californian, the paper of record for UC Berkeley and the city of Berkeley. I'm currently Deputy News Editor with the Daily Californian. Uplifting marginalized communities by honoring them, telling their stories within my writing, and diversifying the stories the Daily Cal publishes is what I am passionate about and constantly working toward. DEI initiatives and writing are especially important to me as a historically marginalized and underrepresented student. I bring my social identities with me in every aspect of my life, including professionally. I identify as Latine and Asian. I also identify as a part of the LGBTQ+ community and I am a disabled student. I'm the daughter of a teacher, a Japanese immigrant and granddaughter of a Mexican immigrant. Representing and uplifting communities I'm a part of and those that I'm not is especially important to me in creating the world I want to be a part of. In the future, I plan to go to graduate school after my time at Cal and get a master's in journalism. I also plan to become a traveling journalist, telling stories and honoring all groups of people. After that, I plan to go into education and teach and share my passion for journalism and community with my students.I'm always looking for opportunities to work with other creators, writers, editors, etc. Please connect with me and message me via LinkedIn and I can share my email with you so we can work together. Thanks!
