As a Ship Planner, I am deployed to take on several different roles on a rotating basis as follows:Primary Role:1) Stowage PlannerSecondary Roles:2) Planning Assistant Coordinator3) Stowage Liaison OfficerThe duties and responsibilities of each role includes:1) Stowage Planner- Working hand in hand with Operations team to plan for any particular vessel in the most efficient way from crane sequencing to container slotting- Exploring and maximising special moves such as Dual Cycle, Crane to Crane shifting and Shifting Onboard within same bay to improve vessel turnaround time- Adhering to each vessel's characteristics to cater in our planning process (i.e. different hatch cover type such as pontoon, MacGregor, piggyback etc.)- Liaising with Central Planner/Agent with stowage adjustments where required- Ensuring safety and stability of the vessel through our planning2) Planning Assistant Coordinator- Ensuring all arrival bayplans submitted are free of any discrepancies ahead of time to allow planner to have sufficient time for smooth planning- Ensuring any documentation required are received/sent out in a timely manner- Assisting container/vessel operator and any other external stakeholder with requests that are past a vessel's closing time (i.e. change of portmark, creating container parameter)- Ordering of haulier with external provider for certain OOG cargo- Vetting and advancing of any cargo advancement requests- Answering and redirecting any queries from any external party3) Stowage Liaison Officer- Responsible for the collection and recording of vessel's draft and tank conditions- Escalating immediately to senior officer of any discrepancies of the above and any extreme stability issues- Point of contact between planner/office and vessel if vessel's email is down or unresponsive- Ensuring plan is accepted by vessel by physically boarding and delivering plan to vessel if vessel has not replied within a certain time upon berthing

As a Platoon Sergeant, I am responsible for the discipline and training of my men. I oversee the training and development of these 30-odd men. As with the other Platoon Sergeants, I am also routinely rotated for the appointment of Company Duty Sergeant (CDS) whereby I coordinate the training program and schedule for the whole company for that day. I hold a position of influence for the decisions from the top-down as well as bottom-up management.

I work on the retail floor serving customers and attending to their needs. My job scope also includes doing replenishments of stock, visual merchandising and product testing. Working at Decathlon also encourages employees to take iniatives thus, exhibiting my autonomy by voluntarily contributing ideas to make work, environment, and customer-co-worker relations better.

At Alfa, I have learnt the importance of ship management as well as time management. During my internship, I was tasked in managing the vessel's day-to-day operations; liaising with agents, arranging for renewal of certificates, updating ship owners of their vessels' fleet movement and more. In total during my internship period, I was managing 11 vessels of which includes bulk carriers and container vessels.I worked closely with other departments within the company itself which includes the finance, procurement, technical and HSSE departments. It has taught me that not one department can function alone without the others as we are all handling the same vessels, only different aspects.It is important to find the cheapest alternatives where possible so as to reduce the owners' costs and expenditure especially during this time of recession in the maritime industry. As mentioned, time management is essential in this line of work as time is equivalent to money. Lots of money. Hence, it is important to arrange for renewal and mailing of certificates to vessels at the most convenient and soonest port.This internship program has given me an insight in the maritime industry of which time is of key importance, and will always be in any other jobs in this industry.
