ANSWERER (and asker) OF WRITING-RELATED QUESTIONSAs both an English professor and copyeditor/proofreader, my job is to answer the big- and small-picture questions – and often ask some tough questions, too. Is there a statement of intent or provable point to the writing? Does each point have adequate support, stay on-topic, and flow smoothly? How should this quote within a quote be cited? Should commas, dashes, or parenthesis be used here and there and everywhere? Answering and asking such questions is my profession and passion. FINDER AND CORRECTOR OF ERRORSIn my undergraduate days, my classmates called me the “APA queen.” For non-academic folks, APA stands for American Psychological Association, and (among other things) they provide guidelines for formatting essays and articles that are written in scientific fields. Being a stickler for detail even as a youngster, I virtually memorized the 400+ page APA manual, thus my friends and classmates requested my assistance in proofreading prior to each assignment’s due date. The particularism with which I approach formatting, and writing in general, has served me well. It has benefitted innumerable clients and students, as well.
