About Louise Van Der Weerd

My research revolves around the use and development of novel MRI and optical imaging techniques to characterize brain function and disease.Currently, the research in my group is focussed on two main topics:Alzheimer’s Disease and Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy:o Development of new imaging techniques for an early diagnosis of AD and CAA, and imaging of the natural history of these diseases. o Development and use of functional MRI and multi-photon techniques to characterize vascular health in models of amyloidosis.o Development of amyloid-targeting antibody fragments as a potential therapy for CAA and AD, using the techniques above as read-outs for therapeutic efficacy.Cardiovascular disease and its effect on brain function and cognition:o Use of the above mentioned functional MRI and multi-photon techniques to characterize the deleterious effect of cardiovascular pathologies on the brain vasculature, and thereby on cognitive function.
