World Regional Geography and Cultural Geography

Enterprise general-assignment reporter and photojournalist for a group of community newspapers. Focus on education, health, agriculture, water issues and community events.

Served as board president for calendar year 2006, during which I initiated a rewriting of the by-laws and establish stronger checks and balances for financials, grant applications and oversight of executive director. Other duties included event coordination, fund raising, public and media relations.

Wrote press releases, copy for brochures, liaised with media outlets, consulted on various creative aspects of business.

Program Director, 2005-2007

Part-time professor of English and Journalism until Fall 2007. Then, full-time, teaching English Composition and Literature.

Day-to-day operations, responsible for financials, customer service, correspondence, bulletins, newsletters, event coordination, and overseeing building maintenance, gift shop and supervising non-religious staff. Brought office into 21st century by updating equipment, procedures, filing systems, and creating numerous forms and crosschecks. Oversaw major office renovation.

My primary job as a reporter was to write feature stories. That included everything from Faith & Values, to Student News, human interest stories and, especially, Arts & Entertainment, which included interviewing celebrities. I also, occasionally, covered breaking news and wrote some investigative stories.

Created and maintained schedules for all volunteers. Assigned work areas as appropriate to skill set. Trained and worked alongside volunteers. Collaborated with managers. Ensured a positive work environment through de-escalation, listening, and compassion.

While working on a doctorate, I taught English, Geography, and Canadian Studies. I created a third-year course, "Interpreting Canadian Landscapes," that covered geography, history, literature in English, fine arts, movies, music and more. Great class. Always packed.
