About Lydia Watts
I am an alumna of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative (BAHI) fellow at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health focused on gun violence prevention and intervention. I am a Co-PI on a community-engaged, qualitative research study with Dr. Joseph Richardson, University of Maryland College Park to learn more about the experience of Black women shot in Baltimore City since the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic. In 2019 I launched the ROAR Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore to provide legal and wrap-around services to survivors of crime in Baltimore City. The staff of 17 (lawyers, paralegals, social workers, therapists, a nurse care manager, and administrative folks) work to engage with individuals and communities impacted by crime in Baltimore City to provide direct services to survivors, address systemic failures, and shape a survivor-defined sense of justice, safety, racial equity, and healing. Over 70% of the people who have come to ROAR for assistance were most recently impacted by gun violence - and often have experienced multiple forms of trauma throughout their lives (called polyvictimization). Learn more at https://roarcenter.org/.In addition, since September 2005, I have also run my own consulting practice - Greater Good Consulting, which provides nonprofit organizational development services. I have founded, worked at, and served on the boards of nonprofits for my entire professional career, primarily working on issues regarding gender-based violence, poverty, free legal services, and racial inequities. When in my third year of law school, I founded Women Empowered Against Violence, Inc.
