The Alberta Conflict Transformation Society (ACTS) is a non-profit, charitable organization with the mission of transforming conflict to cooperation. In September 1998, the Community Conferencing Association of Edmonton was formed with the support of the Edmonton Police Service and a number of other community organizations. In July 2003, the organization's name was changed to the Alberta Conflict Transformation Society (ACTS), to better reflect a broader purpose from Community Conferencing to Conflict Transformation. Conferencing had its conceptual origins in New Zealand with the Maori people and has gained favour in numerous communities around the world as an innovative means of increasing victim satisfaction and offender accountability [Transformative Justice]. It is a program that endeavors to change the manner in which the community currently deals with crime and conflict. To return to a model of justice which brings together all parties, including the community to the conflict, in order to identify the root cause and to determine an effective solution. In recent years, ACTS has worked diligently to broaden its approach towards providing an Alternative Dispute Resolution process for the community. Community Conferencing is ACTS foundational program, and represents a restorative justice approach towards conflict and crime. As our new name reflects a broader approach, the agency has also increased its programming to conflict resolution analysis. This assists the individuals in agencies and organizations to learn about the nature of conflict, new skills and how to deal with conflict in a healthier manner.

    Member Advisory Board
    Kids Care United 2010 - 2012
    Ca
What is Kids Care United?Tom has been shunted from one foster home to another as his mother struggles to kick her drug habit. She manages to get clean long enough for him to be brought home, but quickly goes back to her old ways. So Tom is sent back into care, but the last foster family is no longer available; they've got someone new with them now. Tom feels like nobody cares about him. Soon his new "family" is kids in trouble, hanging out downtown.Roberta has been abused by her stepfather. Her mom is afraid of him, and hasn't found the right way to protect her daughter. Roberta starts acting out at school, so now her teachers are mad at her. Only 8 years old, she's already thinking about suicide. Why do we let this happen to our children? There are two reasons why we need to spend more attention and money on child welfare in this country:Compassion. Why should Roberta, Tom and all the thousands of other neglected or abused children have to suffer because their parents have problems?Self-interest. If Tom and Roberta can get the stability, support, and education they need, they can grow up as productive, contributing members of society. They may be the ones who come up with the next brilliant ideas that help make the world a better place. At a minimum, investing in them as children means that we'll save money that would otherwise be spent on things like jails, addictions treatment programs, welfare, policing, etc. Research shows that every dollar we invest now saves us $7 down the road. Please join our effort to improve the care of children in your city.
