It is not hard for educators to accept the psychology and philosophy of having a growth mindset. The problem is education has decades of a fixed mindset structure. When students have a paper returned we want them to immediately look to see if they did better than ever before. We also want they to be very curious as the total for the whole class efforts are calculated to see if the class outperformed their prior best work. Seminars plus follow-up transform fixed to growth mindsets for all. A very valuable component of the process is John Hattie's Visible Learning research.

The most powerful influence upon student learning is the intrinsic motivation students bring with them to kindergarten. Slowly, this intrinsic motivation is lost in the majority of students. How to Create a Perfect School (book and speaking) is all about how to maintain intrinsic motivation for 12 more years after kindergarten. It is possible!All over the world educators have no idea what could happen in education if the kindergarten level of motivation was present at every grade level. The number one teacher complaint would be, "There's just not enough time to prepare for all these students want to learn."

Because of years of learning from a friend, Bill Martin Jr., I have long desired to publish a series of Early Readers. The books will be in three series: Patterned Bible Stories for Young Readers, Patterned Aesop Stories for Young Readers and Pattern Block Readers for Young Children. The patterned language and art make these books unique in the publishing industry.

The consulting work is two-fold: continuous improvement in classrooms and schools using formative assessments that require student involvement and CSI (Continuous Strategic Improvement) for administrators. CSI combines the best of continuous improvement data and strategic planning. The basic premise for both seminars (in this time of political pressure) is that we can treat employees and students extremely well and also have evidence of increased learning.

I was a principal in Hesperia where I opened up a new school and then was a superintendent in the Enterprise District in Redding. This is where I learned about continuous improvement and began the process that has evolved into full-time consulting work.

My position was to teach 1/2 time and administer 1/2 time. The teaching assignment was elementary math methods and methods for teaching reading/writing. The administrative responsibility was department chairperson for a department of 500 undergraduates in elementary education, over 100 master's degree students and a dozen doctoral students. We were able to bring Bill Martin Jr. and Mary Laycock to campus to teach our students.

I taught for Pasadena and Santa Clara School Districts. The most interesting position, however, was teaching four summers at San Jose State University's lab school. I taught 25 students while being observed by 25 teachers. As an administrator, helped 40 bi-lingual adults obtain their teaching credential in San Jose, was a math/science coordinator in Fullerton and an Assistant Superintendent in Marysville. In was during these years that I learned about and developed mathematics manipulatives. I worked with Evelyn Neufeld and Mary Laycock who were pioneers in the use of base ten blocks and other manipulatives. While working as a math-science coordinator in Fullerton I met Marion Nordberg and learned how to teach reading. She had over 500 visitors a year to visit her classroom. Amazing place.
