Distinguished Professor Lyn Griffiths established and heads the Genomics Research Centre at QUT, with a research focus on identifying genes involved in common traits and disorders including migraine, cardiovascular disease risk traits, memory and concussion. For this research she has established a significant bank of population genomics resources including case control, multigenerational pedigree and genetic isolate from (Norfolk Island) cohorts. She also established and leads the QUT Centre for Genomics and Personalised Health, which aims to discover better methods of diagnosing disease, and to develop targeted treatments based on genetic information. As Director of the MTPConnect and industry-led Bridge and BridgeTech programs, she is a passionate advocate for the translation of research to commercialisation in the pharmaceutical and medical devices-technology fields.

Identifying areas of common need and improving collaboration between research centres is a key priority. The QIH also plans to represent the needs of the health research community to State Government. In turn, the QIH will be a vehicle to attract additional funding and build capacity in biomedical, clinical and public health research. QIH aims to:• Identify strategic research issues and associated future infrastructure planning.• Enhance research activities and outputs through networking, collaboration, sharing infrastructure and expertise.• Attract additional external funding and build capacity in biomedical, clinical research and public health research and development.• Provide advice to the Queensland Government on health research in the Smart State to inform strategy and policy.• Promote the activities of members and advance Queensland’s biomedical, clinical and public health research nationally and internationally.• Provide advice on the process of assessment for Queensland State Clinical and Health Research Fellowship applications. QIH will not be involved in the assessment of Fellowship applications themselves. Show less -

One of these strategic areas of focus is chronic disease prevention which is led through the GHI, which was established in 2007 to develop, co-ordinate and enhance Griffith Health’s research endeavours. Since its inception the Group has achieved considerable success in expanding its research activity The Institute’s chronic disease research agenda promotes the generation of inter-disciplinary knowledge and innovation to address chronic health concerns of significance – such as cancer; metabolic syndrome; and mental health. As a whole, our research agenda focuses on innovative health services and early, proactive preventative health (that takes into account the spectrum of genetic, psychosocial and environmental factors and interventions at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels) within diverse populations. Hence studies from genes to therapies is being undertaken within the Genomics Research Centre.Scientists within the Genomics Research Centre have expertise in gene mapping and the characterisation of gene dysfunction. They also have the ability to translate this information to both diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes, through, for example, DNA mutation testing and vaccine development. The Centre has strong and developing research linkages with practising clinicians in various medical fields, as genes are now known to play a significant role in many disease states. Our aim is to identify genes involved in disease susceptibility and development, so that better forms of counselling, diagnosis and treatment may be used to prevent or cure common genetic disorders.
