Dr. Lynette Austin is a professor and Dean of the College of Health Services at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee.Previously she served as department chair for the department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Abilene Christian University, and attained the rank of full professor. During her tenure (since 2016) as chair, the MS-SLP program at ACU successfully expanded to a second site at ACU Dallas and now serves 100+ graduate students between the two sites. Dr. Austin has facilitaed or participated in a number of department and college innovations, including a program of pre-externship orientation for hospital-based practice, a program for preparation of multilingual clinicians, introduction of teletherapy into the MS-SLP program, and use of simulation in clinical education. Most recently, Dr. Austin has engaged as part of the leadership team of a multi-college and department Interprofessional Education initiative, leading the long-term planning subcommittee and serving on the initiative's steering committee.Likewise, the undergraduate CSD program within the department has seen (and continues to see) growth and expansion during Dr. Austin's tenure as chair. She oversaw the development of programs for international learning and service, undergraduate clinical experiences, and other special experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate CSD students. Beyond administrative functions, Dr. Austin engages in teaching and research in areas having to do with language assessment and intervention for bilingual/multilingual individuals and ELLs. A bilingual SLP (speaking Spanish and English) with over 25 years in the field, Dr. Austin has presented widely on practical ways to effectively provide speech and language services to multicultural/multilingual populations. She also presents and writes in the area of scholarship of teaching and learning in communication sciences and disorders.Dr. Austin serves as a member of the board for Hope Speaks Uganda, an international non-governmental organization dedicated to providing speech, language, swallowing and other intervention to children with disabilities in Uganda. Dr. Austin has traveled to Kampala to participate in Hope Speak's work as a service provider. Dr. Austin has lived internationally, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and one of her favorite things is travel. She is enjoying seeing the world again; favorite places to visit include (all of) South America, Spain, Israel, and the UK- and the homes of her children and (first) grandchild!
