About Lynette Gibson
I am originally from Bermuda. The University of South Carolina (USC) Board of Trustees voted to approve my title as Distinguished Professor Emerita in Nursing, while a faculty at USC Upstate. I retired in May 2021 as Professor and Director of Nursing Research at USC Upstate. I look forward to continuing to mentor nursing and high school students, clinicians, and faculty and engaging with the community. I was a nurse educator of undergraduate and graduate students using appropriate modalities in the classroom, online, ETV, hybrid, and clinical settings. I am privileged to serve in clinical and community settings to conduct research, educate, and provide mentorship to students and community leaders to promote health and educational equity. To do this, I educate/mentor the application of cultural humility when interacting with underserved ethnically diverse people. My scholarly emphasis is on psychological and social aspects of breast cancer survivorship, breast health promotion, and healthy eating and active living, with a focus on Black women. I have been privileged to mentor funded African American undergraduate research assistants, masters' and doctoral students, and faculty in the Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) at the American Nurses Association (ANA), and as a Fellow at the Doctoral Scholars Program (DSP) at the Southern Research Education Board (SREB). All the undergraduate research assistants published and presented in peer-reviewed journals and at research conferences, some of which were international. Additionally, all have achieved master's and doctoral degrees in nursing. I enjoyed merging my research/scholarship, teaching, and community/faith-based service to assist students in appraising nursing research and other types of scholarship to promote evidence-based practice. I emphasized cultural humility when caring for and conducting research, particularly with ethnically diverse people of color, many of whom are underserved, in healthcare and community settings. My continuing objective is to promote equity in nursing, nursing education, and health care. The goal is for ethnically diverse, underserved people to empower themselves to receive culturally congruent, safe, and high-quality care to achieve their highest levels of physical, spiritual, and psychosocial well-being.
