About Lynette Robertson, Mres Phd

I'm a hybrid data scientist with a wealth of knowledge and experience of using applied statistics + machine learning to innovate with data, from a career spanning: --> pure + applied academic research --> applied science --> freelance data consultancy --> data analytics apprenticeship training (commercial + not-for-profit)With a multidisiplinary background rooted in STEM, I operate from a broad modelling framework which includes supervised and unsupervised ML; numerical simulation of dynamic systems (air quality: Gaussian + Lagrangian); and deep expertise in frequentist statistical methods, including feature engineering, and model evaluation + validation. I have honed my craft from casting the data net deep and wide over 20+y, working with a wide variety of mixed, messy, complex, and high-dimensional datasets, ranging from solely numerical, through to largely categorical and text; working End to End across the full data analytics project life cycle, including guiding data discovery and working as lead statistician. Much of my career has been dedicated to the environment, sustainability (nature-based solutions) + public health sectors, working with temporal + spatial, and linked cross-sectional + longitudinal intervention environmental epidemiology datasets, applying innovative research methods + analytical techniques to generate real world evidence; actionable recommendations for policy + practice; and high quality peer-reviewed academic publications. In recent years, through the course of delivering data analytics apprenticeship training I have gained knowledge and experience of a wide variety of enterprise / business intelligence and operations applications of data analytics, including fraud detection, people analytics, and ESG reporting.I am a strong divergent thinker with a deep curiosity in the workings of nature 🔎 a firm commitment to scientific rigor 💪 and highly developed pattern recognition skills 👁️⬢🌿🕸️ Integrity and quality are important to me, and I advocate for the creative evolution of humanity through ethical development and democratisation of machine learning + artificial intelligence technologies ⚖️ amplification of feminine principles in leadership ♀️ and widespread adoption of a true, regenerative sustainability ♻️🌀☀️

  • Openspace Research Centre, Esala, University Of Edinburgh
    Research Fellow, Openspace Research Centre
Openspace Research Centre, Esala, University Of Edinburgh Aug 2011 - Mar 2013
    Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Research Fellow on the OPENspace component of the Scottish Government-funded GreenHealth research programme, investigating relationships between human health + wellbeing and the quantity, quality + accessibility of green space in disadvantaged urban communities in Scotland. My contribution to the programme focused on neighbourhood greenspace psychological / mental health + wellbeing (MHWB), using cross‐sectional survey data linked with spatial datasets, and two validated measures of MHWB (Perceived Stress Scale PSS; short Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale SWEMWBS). Analyses focused on identifying greenspace predictors of MHWB (amount, views, quality), and gender differences in relationships + potential underlying factors. One of the most interesting observations to emerge was an interference (or antagonistic) interaction on gender, for amount of local greenspace + mental wellbeing, indicating a beneficial effect of a greater amount of greenspace for men, but the opposite for women. As well as implications for design + planning, these findings highlight the importance of reporting environmental design research analyses stratified by gender, something which has historically been somewhat overlooked. I also experimented with using work status as a simple proxy of level of exposure to the local neighbourhood environment, with findings indicating that in some circumstances this could be a useful (albeit crude) approach for improving accuracy + clarity of research findings (e.g. absence of true exposure data, or an economical alternative to monitoring). Analyses undertaken also contributed to a 'stress escape response preference' study using conjoint analysis.
