My interest in business behaviour started in the early 1990s with the emergence of corporate social responsibility. Sadly, something that promised so much with the possibility of companies who were doing the wrong thing losing their licence to operate was subsequently weakened to a PR/marketing and tick box governance exercise. Nevertheless, I have spent most of my professional life in the commercial world, supporting managers transition from expert to strategic mindsets, and coaching executives who wanted to be well-rounded leaders. I support leaders to balance the needs of changing business contexts, commercial pressures, business ethics and the complexity of the modern business environment.I am the founder and CEO of Nature Needs More, a charity registered in Australia, whose focus is the legal and illegal trade in exotic and endangered wildlife. The legal trade has been allowed to fly under the radar for decades. The landmark May 2019 IPBES report into the global extinction crisis confirmed that direct exploitation for trade is the most important driver of decline and extinction risk for marine species and the second most important driver for terrestrial and freshwater species. The legal trade in endangered species is huge, and for the most part unchecked; it is enabling the equally massive illegal trade to flourish. Currently, the legal and illegal trade are so intertwined that they are functionally inseparable. With a PhD in Particle Physics I don’t have a traditional conservation background, but I am well versed in solving complex problems. Having spent most of my career in the corporate sector, I have a strong, strategic commercial mindset. This has allowed me to propose and champion pragmatic and timely solutions to tackle the flaws in the regulation of the legal trade of endangered species. I am also the founder of HowToSpendItEthically.Org, an online magazine exposing both the lack of transparency and the lack of sustainability of the legal trade in endangered species. I recently launched LynnJohnson.News.

Founder / CeoNature Needs More Ltd Jan 2018 - PresentMelbourne, Vic, AuI am the founder and CEO of Nature Needs More, a non-profit company and registered charity pioneering new ways of addressing the illegal international wildlife trade. Because the illegal and legal trade are so intertwined as to be functionally inseparable, the regulator of the legal trade, CITES, needs to be urgently modernised. We have developed concrete, pragmatic proposals for a 3-step modernisation process of CITES. The current 1970s paper-based system, still used by most of the CITES 183 signatory countries, does not integrate with customs services and easily enables the laundering of illegal products into the legal marketplace. Any of the stakeholders - business, government, or conservation – who want the legal trade in endangered species to continue must commit to validating that the legal trade is working to save species. Radical transparency is the first step, until trade is transparent there is no proof of sustainability. Modernising the CITES regulator is urgent as highlighted by the landmark May 2019 IPBES report into the global extinction crisis, which confirmed that direct exploitation for trade is the most important driver of decline and extinction risk for marine species and the second most important driver for terrestrial and freshwater species. -

In 2023, join #teamwildlife by signing up to My Wildlife Challenge. Your Challenge, Your Choice! -
FounderHowtospenditethically.Org May 2020 - Dec 2023Melbourne, AuI am the founder of HowToSpendItEthically.Org, an online magazine exposing the lack of transparency and sustainability of the legal trade in endangered species. Some of the most profitable luxury conglomerates use a wide range of endangered species in their products without any viable scrutiny due to the lack of transparency and the obsolete trade monitoring system under CITES. HowToSpendItEthically.Org highlights these flaws in the legal trade system which are enabling the illegal trade to flourish. One aim of HowToSpendItEthically.Org is to support consumers make more informed choices in their purchasing when it comes to products and brands using endangered species. The levels of greenwashing in the luxury sector needs to be exposed. -
FounderBreaking The Brand Jan 2013 - Dec 2017I am the founder of the Breaking the Brand project. The project’s aim is to ‘break the brand and so stop the demand’ for rhino horn in Viet Nam. After researching the motivations of the key rhino horn users Vietnam throughout 2013 and 2014, we launched our first demand reduction campaign in 2014. Whilst demand for rhino horn has decreased every year since, hundreds of rhinos are still killed for their horn. After researching the demand for illegal wildlife ‘products’, in 2017 I concluded that the illegal trade cannot be tackled until the loopholes in the legal trade in endangered species are closed. Currently the legal and the illegal trade are functionally inseparable. At that point Breaking The Brand was incorporated into Nature Needs More Ltd, a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). -
