Lynn Cheng is a Animal Biology Student at the University of Guelph at Guelph Humane Society (GHS). Colleagues describe them as "Lynn was a Youth Challenge International (YCI) volunteer participant in the Innovate My Future Program from July 2022 to February 2023. YCI is a leading global youth development organization that also works in Canada on the intersections of climate change and youth livelihoods. The Innovate My Future Program supports youth Climate Leaders to enhance their skills and refine and grow climate solutions – whether they are community-based initiatives or social enterprises and green businesses. Lynn’s participation in a volunteer project with YCI is a significant accomplishment that shows her dedication, hard work, and commitment to her community and taking climate action. Along with her team, Climate Crusaders, Lynn helped create a workshop aimed at educating individuals about the benefits of slow fashion and repairing clothing, as well as providing practical tips on how to do it easily. Throughout the project, Lynn worked in challenging environments with minimal supervision, taking on a high level of responsibility. Lynn’s placement included: 1) An intensive design-thinking and systems-thinking phase to guide her through the process of designing and growing sustainable, climate-focused ventures and projects. 2) Developing leadership, project management, and stakeholder engagement skills. 3) Developing and implementing a tangible project with sustainable impact in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. During Lynn’s time in the Innovate My Future Program, she displayed many skills, but what stood out were her abilities to effectively communicate her ideas, maintain consistency throughout the program, and work independently. Lynn proved to be a great asset as a volunteer with Youth Challenge International and made an important contribution to community climate action."
