I am also responsible Staff Training. I do Intake/Brief Assessment with clients for our OHIP Covered CBT Service. I help clients from a diverse population, ages 15 - 70+. I also provide Resources/Referrals when we are not in a position to meet the needs of a client (challenges outside of our current Scope of Practice), and Bridging to enhance their overall care. I train and supervise our Social Work and Psychology Students, completing their M.A. Placements/Practicums with TeleCBT; they learn our Scope of Practice, Intentional Interviewing, the Intake Process (Brief Assessment), how to Refer Out, Bridging, and how to process, track, and book our Fax Referrals. I create and facilitate Group Therapy and Support Group Programs (e.g. OCD Therapy Group). I do Workshops on various topics with our Physicians (Defusing Hostility, Working with Suicidal Clients/Safety Planning, Self-Awareness, Gestalt Therapy Tools). I also review Fax Referrals and meet with clients referred by their Family Doctors who are interested in our services. I do Private Pay Counselling/Therapy for a variety of challenges (particularly the Anxiety Disorders), including RTW planning that focuses on finding meaningful and suitable work for clients coming back to the workplace from injury or illness, including prevention, accommodation, and support for recovery. I help our Students with One on One Case Management with Clients towards the end of their Placements. I complete Student Evaluations for the Universities (U. of T., U Waterloo/Renison College). Additionally, I work with students to ensure they are practicing good Self Care. We discuss Ergonomic Safety and Psychological Wellness to ensure maintenance of good mental and physical health practices.

I started out at CAMH as the Client Relations Facilitator for all patients, their families and friends, and for the general public. My role was to investigate complaints and critical incidents and to bring each case to a close with the best possible outcome. I also accepted feedback and compliments about our hospital and staff. In 2007 I transferred to Education Services as a Community Health and Education Specialist. My primary role was as Co-Coordinator and Trainer of all Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behaviour (PMAB), programs, CAMH wide (over 5,000 staff, students, and volunteers). Our annual PMAB Program was Mandatory, and we also offered training in Defusing Hostility Over The Telephone, Community Worker Safety Training, and PMAB for Residents/Physicians. Additionally, I was the Education Liaison for Forensics, Geriatrics, Dual Diagnosis, and our Emergency Department, and available to all inpatient and outpatient units/programs upon request. I also taught CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), The Personality Disorders, and Environmental Safety Auditing (Risk Assessment), and PMAB to students from U. Of T., York University, and George Brown College, as well as Security Officers and Front Line Staff at both our hospital and Mount Sinai through CAMH, one of the largest teaching hospitals in North America.Additionally, I conducted Environmental Safety Audits, trained Staff in Critical Incident Management/Debriefing and Ergonomic Safety/Health and Wellness.

I also design courses for CTI, such as Rapid Risk Assessment For Forensics Residents. Work not connected to CAMH was done on weekends. I will always value the experiences I had through CTI, and the amazing Trainers I had the opportunity to work with.

I designed the original curriculum for the first Addictions Worker College Diploma Program at CDI Toronto Campus. I piloted this 15 course program, and continued to develop and improve it while teaching at CDI. I used a combination of interactive teaching (role-play), lectures, and train-the-trainer (students teach the class), styles to teach 30-35+ students per class, to become entry level Addictions Counsellors. This program was certified by the CCACB.

This is where it all began! I started off as a Volunteer at Christie Gardens Apartments and Care, providing Friendly Visiting, Medical Escorting, and Assisting with Special Events, as well as the Monthly Reading Group. Then, after completing my college diploma in Counselling, I was fortunate to work as a Student Counsellor under the Supervision of Salvation Army Sergeant, Phyllis Bobbet. Together, we ran both Support Groups and Group Therapy Programs for Residents. I am indebted to Ann Klausen, Program Director at the time, who asked: “You want to do what?”, when I walked into her office one day and began talking about the benefits of these groups and how I would like to tell people about their benefits and then begin running groups. The next thing I knew I was standing at a podium in front of 150 people in the auditorium explaining the benefits of group therapy, while Ann and Phyllis cheered me on. It was my first public speaking event in my career, with many more to come. It was a huge success, thankfully, and Phyllis and I ran some amazing groups together until 1998 when I left to earn my B.A. in Psychology at The University Of Waterloo.
