As a university professor, I teach communication and humanities (including film) courses at ERAU. I best experience the world through traveling and writing. To date, I've authored, co-authored, or edited 13 books. My most recent publications are 'Sherlock Holmes for the 21st Century: Essays on New Adaptations,' 'The Doctor Who Franchise: American Influence, Fan Culture, and the Spinoffs,' and 'The Hobbits: The Many Lives of Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin,' all out in 2012. I've previously written about such TV series as 'Torchwood,' 'LOST,' 'Battlestar Galactica,' and 'Heroes.'In 2010 I began writing for PopMatters, and I currently write a monthly film/TV column called Deep Focus. As time allows, I write features and reviews, too.Travel is a passion, and I try to combine research with the sheer enjoyment of being on the road. Upcoming destinations: Santa Fe, Wellington and Queenstown, Honolulu, and London. Some of my favorite places (so far) are in Scotland, Wales, Canada, and New Zealand.My Ph.D. is in English, rhetoric, composition, and technical communication.
