State Of Kansas/University Of Kansas Medical Center: Managing EditorElsevier 2003 - 2023Kansas City Metropolitan AreaI established and oversaw the Editorial Offices of the Elsevier peer-reviewed scientific journals, Pharmacology & Therapeutics (P&T) and Biochemical Pharmacology (BCP), and a monograph series, Advances in Pharmacology. In conjunction with the editor-in-chiefs, 62 editors, staff and the publisher I helped formulate annual strategic plans then achieved the operational goals within budget. For continuous feedback loops, I created and monitored key performance indicators then instituted the ongoing reporting mechanisms. After synthesizing the data, I presented to management the pertinent data analytics to evaluate pipeline contents, editorial advisory board members’ performance, and submission acceptance rates to ensure timely, high impact publications. I used month-to-month comparisons with prior year data and ad hoc analyses to adjust policies, procedures and software configuration to optimize year-end results and help reduce the risk of accepting unethical manuscripts. I initiated and maintained a goodwill relationship with all members of the editorial advisory boards through an onboarding process of my design. I reconciled the State of Kansas budget reports to ensure expense allocations I prepared were accurately applied and spending was in line with expectations. I managed executive and international meetings, arranged schedules, logistics, agendas and minutes. I routinely communicated with authors, reviewers, editors and internal colleagues around the globe to offer the best possible publishing experience.Key accomplishments:• I directed the smooth conversion of the submission, review and revision processes from an e-mail-based configuration to web-based tracking systems for both journals.• During my tenure both journals achieved peak submission volumes (BCP: 867 in 2003 to 3,865 in 2023 / P&T: 61 in 2003 to 160 in 2023) and impact factors (BCP: 3.581 for 2006 to 5.800 for 2022 / P&T: 7.397 for 2003 to 13.600 for 2022) since inception (BCP 1958 / P&T 1979). -

I wrote the author/reviewer/editor reference guides, and developed routine and ad hoc reporting mechanisms. Every accepted manuscript crossed my desk for format and citation auditing.Key accomplishments:• In collaboration with HighWire Press, I facilitated the alpha and beta testing of Bench>Press in tandem with live operations.• I supervised the eventual migration to the finalized web-based system, personally trained the editors and wrote the user guides for authors, reviewers and editors.• Implementation of Bench>Press and Fast Forward publication reduced the submission to first decision turnaround time from about 3 months to about 1 month, and submission to acceptance turnaround time from about 9 months to about 2 months.• For these reasons, I was the first Managing Editor awarded a bonus since the journal was founded in 1908.
