Worked within the Center for Infectious Diseases as part of the Informatics Branch. I contributed to the development of flexible data systems to monitor and prevent the spread of diseases. My work involved database architecture building, data governance around disease data for California, and supporting data scientists studying infectious diseases.

Contributed to California's COVID-19 response within the Data Processing and Informatics Section of the Center for Infectious Diseases. I facilitated the electronic collection, storage, and transfer of data related to testing, vaccination, or hospitalizations for COVID-19. Coordinated data communication to public health partners across multiple data environments, including creating dynamic dashboards. Designed, implemented, and maintained databases that were used by our varied data partners. As well as added a key feature to CA Notify, which is a CDPH phone application that uses Bluetooth to alert users of possible exposures.Presented our workflow within CDPH's Data Processing and Informatics Section at the RStudio Conference (2022):

Produced COVID-19 surveillance reports for the state of California, which involved cleaning data and maintaining data quality, completing data analysis, creating data pipelines, and developing user interface applications. I worked closely with state and local public health departments, laboratories, Communicable Disease Controllers and other health agencies.

Collaborated with the CA Department of Social Services (CDSS), CA Department of Education (CDE), the CA Employment Development Department (EDD) and the Coleridge Initiative to conduct a data science training geared towards government agency staff and public policy analysts.

Advanced data science training in a peer-learning environment. I also assisted with the D-Lab's services, including data science consulting and facilitating coding workshops.

Previously taught undergraduates and graduate students. Class rosters ranged from 30 to 75 students. Duties included preparing weekly lesson plans, holding office hours, leading review sessions, designing and grading assignments. Worked on an epidemiologic research study to determine the best methods to prevent and control the ongoing transmission of COVID-19. I assisted with data management, performed regular data quality checks, analysis, developed a data visualization dashboard, and created ad hoc data reports.

In this internship, I supported mental health programs by performing program evaluations. I developed an implementation plan to administer cardiovascular risk assessments, conducted qualitative interviews to assess the utility of data pipelines, and completed data analysis and visualizations.

Completed a two-year biomedical research training program at the National Eye Institute in the Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research. I examined the brain processes involved when the eyes pick up physical signals and are transformed into perceptions, thoughts, and actions. During this program, I learned how to perform neuroscience experiments using fMRI and single-cell recording electrophysiology. I collected, processed, and analyzed structural and functional neuroimaging data, as well as 3D printed these data.Published work from this role:

Coordinated a two-year study examining the effects of a social-emotional intervention (mindfulness meditation) in public schools. To accomplish this, I supervised 40+ research assistants, which involved interviewing, training, and performance evaluation. I reviewed the data quality for 600+ participants across four-time points. I managed three Institutional Review Board protocols, ensuring that our daily procedures were compliant. I also fostered and maintained relationships with 7 research sites including principals, administrative staff, teachers, and parents.Published work from this role:

As a culmination of my undergraduate studies, I completed an honors thesis examining the role of cultural beliefs on emotion regulation outcomes. Throughout this process, I developed the hypotheses, decided on methodology, collected data, analyzed the data, and presented the results at a national conference.

Studied how people regulate their emotions to understand how to enhance self-control. I created emotion elicitation stimuli with a standardized image set and E-Prime software. Using psychophysiology tools, I collected skin conductance and heart rate data from adult participants. I developed a data management procedure with Microsoft Access and trained research assistants on E-Prime software.

Studied risk and resilience among youth and their families to help inform prevention and intervention strategies. I completed full-day data collection sessions (8 AM - 8 PM) with adolescent participants from socioeconomically diverse backgrounds. The data included surveys, biological samples, and completion of behavior tasks, such as the cold pressor test. I trained research assistants on E-Prime software, various lab tasks, and assisted with a meta-analysis on the overlap of callous-unemotional traits with measures of both empathy and guilt.

Studied the brain and behavioral interactions between social and drug rewards with animal models. I systematically coded the behavior with Behavior Tracker and collected blood plasma samples.

Studied how social factors--particularly gender and racial stereotypes--influence perception, cognition, and behavior. I modified research measurements involving stimuli (avatar faces), surveys, and reaction time tools with software such as E-Prime, MouseTracker, and Qualtrics. I also behaviorally coded video sessions and recruited and collected data from adult participants on social cognition paradigms.

Studied the efficacy of problem-solving therapy on treating postpartum depression. I scored clinical interviews with the GRID-HAMD, conducted literature reviews on the intersection of problem-solving therapy and clinical depression, recruited participants in Philadelphia hospitals, and inputted data.
