I've spent most of my working life in either academia or the media, sometimes simultaneously.I joined La Trobe University in 2006, where I have held a range of roles as a journalism lecturer, researcher, and research leader. I am currently Associate Dean, Research and Industry Engagement, for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Theme Lead for La Trobe's university-side research theme, Social Change and Equity. I led the ARC-funded research project, New Beats, which is investigating the aftermath of job loss for journalists whose roles were made redundant. My other research interests include media coverage of weather and climate, and media coverage of long COVID.After graduating in History from the University of Melbourne in 1981, I completed a PhD at Monash University examining the pop music scene in Australia during the 1960s. My media experience includes a nine-year stint at ABC radio, where I was based at Triple J, setting up the station's Hottest 100 listener poll and presenting the arts and entertainment program, Creatures of the Spotlight. I've also worked as a writer, researcher and interviewer for ABC TV documentary series 'Long Way To The Top' and 'Love Is In The Air'.My print experience includes a two-year stint as the film journalist at The Australian, prior to which I wrote for a range of publications including The Age, the US-based trade paper, The Hollywood Reporter, and Rolling Stone Australia. I also appeared. on the Ten Network's 'The Panel.'I'm the writer and researcher of a one-hour documentary about the 2007 documentary, 'The Sounds of Aus' that told the story of the Australian accent. In 2008 it was awarded Chicago's Hugo prize for best international documentary. My 2017 book, The Weather Obsession (MUP) examines how digital media has changed the way we connect to the weather. I'm is also the co-editor of Ethics for Digital Journalists: Emerging Best Practices (Routledge: 2015).
