About Maximus Chen
Aerospace Engineering Master's student with experience in Avionics Systems Integration and researching applications of machine learning for characterizing composite materials. Originally from Simi Valley California, I’ve been studying at the University of Arizona in Tucson since 2019. During my undergrad studies, I participated in the Accelerated Master's Program (AMP) to take graduate-level courses and was a co-president of the Wildcat Rocket Engineering Club (WREC) for the 2022-23 school year. I graduated Cum Laude in 2023 and have since been studying the application of deep learning algorithms to identify microstructures and damage features in Micro-CT scans of Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs). After graduation, I intend to obtain my private pilot’s certification and continue exploring the industry with an interest in flight testing.

At Design Day 2023, we received the Perseverance and Recovery award for overcoming non-engineering challenges, and we were the highest-scoring aerospace class project. I acted as the controls specialist; mapped the paraglider’s flight dynamics to an autonomous flight control system intended for fixed-wing UAS and set up a Linux-based camera system running off the UAS’ central power for recording thermal video. I helped flight test and document all 5 UAS subsystems with reports and diagrams.
