After 35 enjoyably challenging and professionally rewarding years, effective January 1, 2020, I gave myself "The Big Promotion" and retired from private practice. I had the privilege and pleasure of practicing with Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP (formerly Womble Carlyle) for 32 of my 35 years of private practice, 26 of which were as an equity partner in the firm. I am forever grateful to my partners and other colleagues for the professional and leadership opportunities given me over the years, and to the many clients with whom I have enjoyed such excellent personal and professional relationships. The Big Promotion has equipped and given me the necessary time--a precious commodity in private practice--to pursue other leadership and professional opportunities, including teaching, mentoring and board service. Since 2020, I have been serving as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of North Carolina School of Law, where I teach an advanced seminar course on Intellectual Property Strategies & Transactions. I now serve on the Executive Board of the Lyle School of Engineering at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Through the Hart Center for Engineering Leadership at SMU’s Lyle School of Engineering, I also serve as an industry mentor to university students and aspiring professionals. I am committed to our church and community, and have had the pleasure of serving in leadership positions on multiple boards and civic organizations.
