As an office engineer assistant, my primary responsibilities included supporting the inspection process by assisting in the review and filing of both paper and electronic inspection reports, permits, Notice of Materials to be used such as CEM-3101s, and risk assessments. I gained a thorough understanding of Caltrans’ plans and specifications to ensure compliance. Additionally, I facilitated the smooth operation of office tasks such as mail distribution and project closeout procedures. Furthermore, I played a crucial role in preparing the Work Estimating Norm (WEN) and provided valuable assistance to the Staff Services Analyst, Senior Bridge Engineer, and other team members daily. This involved tasks such as conducting Shop Drawing reviews as necessary. As part of my routine assignment, I was able to shadow a qualified inspector to understand the fabrication of steel and concrete structures such as I-beams, girders, and concrete placement.

I was responsible for designing sampling and analysis procedures and actively engaged in the collection and evaluation of data. Additionally, I was tasked with preparing the necessary reports to document our findings.One notable accomplishment during this period was the successful completion of field research conducted at Ken Malloy Harbor Regional Park Machado Lake. This involved the operation of a biofiltration system where wetland and lake water was pumped in. I was responsible for both testing the water quality and measuring flow rates, ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the biofiltration system. This hands-on experience allowed for the acquisition of valuable data and insights into the environmental conditions at the site, which contributed to our ongoing research and understanding of this unique ecosystem.

Under the guidance of Dr. Sanjay Mohanty, I had the opportunity to contribute significantly to the creation and operation of multiple biofiltration systems designed to capture and degrade pollutants from stormwater runoff within urban areas. My responsibilities extended to recording results, developing hypotheses, and drafting comprehensive reports based on the findings of our experiments. In addition to hands-on work, I collaborated closely with both the professor and fellow graduate students to conduct extensive primary and secondary source research. This included the critical task of preparing research samples and ensuring the availability of the necessary chemical quantities for our experiments. One of my most notable achievements during this period was being published as a co-author on a research paper.

In my role, I utilized an electron scanning microscope to assemble images of zinc oxide and copper oxide structures, allowing for detailed comparisons of their morphology and dimensions. These comparative analyses were integral to our efforts to enhance the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells through the synthesis of zinc oxide and copper oxide.
