About Marcello Francioni
I am a Consultant whose expertise lies in inter-cultural awareness and a DEI specialist. My work aims at creating learning content that raises Cultural Intelligence (CQ) and helps make cultural encounters an enriching and eye-opening experience for learners all over the world. My approach bridges the current trend of global movement for study, work, and travel with the need to understand local particularities through an intersectional lens that foregrounds diversity and inclusion on both ends of cultural encounters. By training, I am an Anthropologist and my research explored how gender, race, ethnicity, desire and sexuality connect in various contexts of social life in contemporary Japan. I have been sharing my ethnographic experience through traditional writing and graphic novel.

Phd
PhD in Anthropology, obtained from the Department od Anthropology and Sociology at SOAS University of London. My doctoral research focuses on the Japanese service industry and, more specifically, on issues of gender, care and knowledge transmission in queer nightlife. During his 14-month fieldwork, I worked as a bar help (miseko) at a Japanese-style gay bar in Japan’s largest ‘gay town,’ Shinjuku Ni-chome (Tokyo), learning about That Bar Life (also the title of his thesis). Under the vigilant surveillance of my manager, I observed the networks of mutual support existing among bars, and attempted to navigate the delicate customer-staff interactions across the counter. Ultimately, I learnt that nightlife is a business that requires extreme dedication and continuous transformation from its practitioners in order to meet the needs and desires of their counterparts, and make them feel special.
