Ex-Scientist project manager at work, gamer at home.Hi there, I’m Matt, a project manager at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) Research B.V. I am passionate about making science accessible to everyone – whether it’s our direct colleagues, scientists from other disciplines or general public. Combining this passion and my scientific background through my PhD in cell biology and biomaterials motivates me use this knowledge and experience in advancing science through enabling other researchers in their scientific careers. I do so as project manager working on a variety of pre- and post- award projects, and I am also assigned to the Department of Radiotherapy to scout and support funding and partnership opportunities. In addition to these, I am interested in bringing the newly developed knowledge to the team on artificial intelligence (AI) and Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) grants.During my PhD, I focused on studying the extracellular matrix (ECM), the cellular "home," and how this complex network of proteins, glycoproteins, and glycosaminoglycans interacts with cells and influences them. I developed a passion for advanced imaging, particularly of the ECM and the incredible structures within our bodies. I've found that well-crafted scientific visuals can convey a story more effectively than lengthy text. Drawing inspiration from my love of video games, I knew that games could help you with multitasking, paying attention to detail and managing (sometimes stressful) situations, but I didn’t know that I could learn from them in terms of (visual) storytelling.Now, I'm excited to apply these skills to support other researchers in their scientific endeavors.
