About Maarten Schoemaker
I am highly motivated in coastal protection. This already started when I was just a kid. I regularly visited my grandmother near the beach in Zealand, a coastal province in the western part of the Netherlands. There I always tried to build sand castles that can withstand the rising tide as long as possible. We also regularly visited the Eastern Scheldt barrier that was around the corner. It was then I decided I want to do that the rest of my life!During my study at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, I got enormously intruiged by anything that has to do with Hydraulic Engineering, in the broadest sense. Storm surge barriers, dikes, serious gaming, optimization of systems, probablistic design, etc: I really want to make a difference in flood risk around the globe, especially with the rising sea level. My work at Royal HaskoningDHV is in line with that. I am especially proud of my work for the Afsluitdijk tender, where I sincerely enjoyed connecting the interests of different stakeholders and transforming these into one coherent solution that makes it better for everyone.

CurrentI am a PhD candidate on the optimization of the life cycle cost for flood protection infrastructure projects. How can the reinforcement/construction of flood defense infrastructure projects be designed through an optimized life cycle approach, taking into account expendability and the uncertainty of the future scenarios, such as a.o. climate change, subsidence and economic growth?With upcoming climate change, it is vital that we properly understand the expected life cycle of flood protection infrastructure with all its future uncertainties. The main goal is to find out what would be the optimal increment of the construction of flood protection infrastructure (revetments/dikes/storm surge barriers) so that we are making the robust decisions with least regret in 50-100 years from now.
