About Maarten Van Keulen

Coffee trader with a purpose to show the world that everyone in the coffee value chain can live a happy, healthy and prosperous life. As a social entrepreneur, it’s my job to “marry” financial profits with social and ecological profits. I use the coffee industry as a means to do so. I graduated on the practical implementation of sustainable business models and circular economy. Specialized in commodity and agricultural value chains like coffee and cacao, as well as broad sustainability (social, ecological, financial) in various organizations. Strengths lie in systems thinking, stimulating organizational change and creating a broad stakeholder support for sustainability efforts. Worked as a professional sports coach and head barista next to studies. Fluent in English, Dutch, Norwegian and German.

  • This Side Up Coffees
    Contract Manager Office Market
This Side Up Coffees Jun 2020 - Present
    Amsterdam Area
Responsible for the acquisition and maintenance of the roasted coffee contracts with governments, schools and private companies. This job includes participating in public tenders, overseeing the multiple contract roasteries and making sure there is 100% traceability of the coffee at all times. In 2020, This Side Up Coffees got into a closer and closer collaboration with the Circular Coffee Collective. It was understood that the two companies would be stronger together in acquiring big coffee contracts for offices, amongst them being governments, schools and private companies. The contracts that the Circular Coffee Collective had, were transferred to the new merged company, under the name of This Side Up Coffees. In this entity, This Side Up Coffees is responsible for the contract, but does not roast the coffee. Roasting is contracted to several roasters, therefore being what is called a "multi-local" approach. In this way, the prices for the green coffee and the entire traceability of the supply train can be guaranteed. As Maarten founded the Circular Coffee Collective, it was only natural to continue with these activities within the newly merged company.

  • Circular Coffee Collective
    Founder
Circular Coffee Collective Jul 2018 - Jun 2021
    Utrecht
(Circular Coffee Collective got acquired and was merged with This Side Up Coffees)The circular economy starts with a cup of coffee.Coffee is one of the easiest things to get in our current society. Its value chain however, isn’t quite as easy. Waste gets produced at many points, and value leaks away. It’s a complicated product to get circular. So if you manage this, many other things will be quite straightforward. The Circular Coffee Collective is a collective of the most sustainable companies in the coffee, tea, cocoa and other industries that together make your office's coffee corner. We show you that it's possible to have products that taste good and do good, without paying the jackpot. Together we show that a new economy is possible, and through this, inspire you to take it even further. Next to this, we also run a non-profit fund. Check our fund at www.circularcoffeefund.com .
