Maarten Verwey became director-general Economic and Financial Affairs in February 2020. Before that he held several senior management positions in the European Commission (since 2011) and the Dutch Ministry of Finance. In these positions he played a leading role in a number of important European initiatives. In May 2010 he came up with the idea for the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) structure and led the work on its establishment. He chaired the negotiations on the ESM treaty (2011). He was the EU mission chief for the financial adjustment programme for Cyprus (2012-2014) and led the work on the creation and implementation of the Investment Plan for Europe “Juncker plan” (2014). In the summer of 2015, he directed the origination of an emergency bridge loan for Greece. He was nominated EU coordinator for the EU-Turkey statement in 2016. In response to Covid-19 crisis he led the work on the creation and implementation of the SURE instrument and the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). He represents the European Commission in the EU’s Economic and Financial Committee (EFC) and in the G7 as finance deputy.
