The thesis was part of the Joint Industry Project 'Helicopter Operations for Offshore Ships' (HELIOS JIP). The goal of the JIP is to improve workability and safety of helicopter operations in the offshore industry. The master thesis' title is: “Using wave spectrum estimation from measured ship motion data topredict the Motion Severity Index value 20 minutes in advance”.The Motion Severity Index is a maximum value of an apparent heel angle; the fraction between the horizontal and the vertical accelerations of a helicopter platform on a ship.The possibilities to calculate the wave energy spectrum by motion data and transfer functions is studied extensively.
