Profile bio

About Maarten Herpen, Van

As the former founder of Philips Africa Innovation Hub, I served as the unit’s director for five years, working with a team of corporate social intrapreneurs on inclusive health innovation (explored 35 innovations of which 5 transitioned-to-scale). Now I have founded Acacia Impact Innovation to continue my career as scientist, innovation consultant and social entrepreneur to help social impact innovators & funders be more successful, especially in the field of inclusive and humanitarian innovation and on innovations to address climate challenges. I am supporting a number of social enterprises including www.inuka.io (a start-up in mental health). In recent years I have made important scientific contributions to the field of atmospheric methane removal technologies, highlighted by my critical role in the ISAMO consortium, and first authorship of a PNAS paper about methane removal by mineral dust mixed with sea spray over the North Atlantic. Throughout my career, I combined my technical and business background and I have extensive experience in public-private collaboration. I am known for my many innovative ideas and entrepreneurial mindset, that resulted in a large number of patents (>100 granted patents) and new business models. I served on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council for Social Innovation, and I am an alumnus of the Global Young Academy of Science (200 young scholars who combine excellence in research with a demonstrated passion for delivering positive social impact). I hold a PhD in physics and master’s degree in business innovation.

Listed skills include Social Innovation, Business Strategy, R&D, Intrapreneurship, and 35 others.

Innovation Director Africa, Strategy & Business Development

Africa / Netherlands

In this role I am in charge of innovation for Philips across Africa, with the aim to adapt the Philips product portfolio to the specific needs of the local market in Africa, by scouting for new innovations and by developing these innovations into businesses.I am leading the Philips Africa Innovation Hub, which is the center for Philips to develop locally relevant innovation in-Africa, for-Africa, with local African talent. I am leading a team of scientists and (social) entrepreneurs with the mission to improve the lives of people in Africa through meaningful innovation. We are focusing on equitable innovations in support of SDG-3; Health (specifically access to healthcare and healthy living). As an example of ‘healthy living’, we are working on breastfeeding solutions that empower women in Africa to keep on breastfeeding when they go back to work. In the area of healthcare, we are creating medical devices for low resource settings. Examples are the children’s automated respiratory rate monitor for use in pneumonia diagnosis (a top killer for children in Africa) and our wind-up fetal Doppler device to detect complications during delivery. Both devices are now commercially available. Our biggest project, the Community Life Centers, is a community driven and integrated approach to strenghtening primary healthcare, which bundles technology (solar, healthcare, lighting, IT) with services.

R&D Strategy For East Africa

Nairobi

Asignment to work on an R&D strategy for Philips in East Africa. This resulted into the creation of the Philips Africa Innovation Hub. My big insight in Kenya came when I recognized that to tackle some of Africa’s biggest societal issues, such as poverty and high maternal and child mortality, innovations are needed for a large underserved group of people that are currently excluded from innovations. In order for the SDGs to make a meaningful impact, nobody should be left behind. This is why we need established companies like Philips to create equitable innovations that advance the SDGs. If they do this, companies can integrate support of the SDGs into their core business strategies. The insight was that established companies need to specifically structure themselves to make this possible. This is the big idea behind the Philips Africa Innovation Hub, which is using a corporate venturing approach.

Venture Manager

As venture manager I worked as a corporate enterpreneur within the Philips organization. I founded and managed 3 new corporate ventures through the first stages of development within Philips' corporate entrepreneurship programs, including 'Luminous Carpets' and 'LightVibes'.
