My RollI provide Semi Independent Living Services to adults with disabilities. I check in on them in their homes on a weekly basis to assess their progress on goals set by them, their family and their social workers. Additionally, the company hosts evening activities in the community where I help clients socialize with their peers and ensure everyone has a good time. How I Do ItWhile in their home, I ask what the client has done during the week to gauge what has been accomplished and what still needs to be done when it comes to their goals. This involves motivational interviewing and positive strengths-based communication to encourage progress rather than nag missteps. While in the community, I gate keep conversation by involving quieter clients in the conversation or asking talkative clients to let others have a turn. I have to think on my feet throughout the activity to lead 10-25 clients at a time within a team of 2-5 other staff. There are many moving pieces that need to be managed. What I’ve LearnedThis job pushes me to meet people where they are at. I can assess the needs of people different than me in a more open-minded way. My communication skills are always evolving as I find new ways to explain concepts, no matter how simple or complex, to people of different capabilities than me and make sure they understand me.
