The Program Officer for Creative Learning reflects the Endowments’ emphasis on work that helps ensure a regional environment where all Pittsburgh residents – especially children and youth – have access to the benefits of creative opportunities.At Heinz, the Program Officer develops and implements a range of cross-functional grantmaking activity related to arts education and creativity in out-of-school, community, and PK-12 settings. The Endowments supports grantmaking in three primary emphasis areas - Creativity, Learning, and Sustainability – with particular attention given to the work of nonprofits that crosses over into one or more of the emphasis areas.Additionally, the Program Officer is responsible for advancing the foundation’s work in arts education, primarily through the Creative Learning Initiative. He fosters a slate of arts education grantees and collaborates with the Endowments’ vice presidents of Creativity and Learning in developing grantmaking initiatives.

Led Sprout’s grantmaking by taking principal responsibility for the management and administration of funding resources granted through the organization’s programs, and supervised the portfolio of funded projects. Provided for diligent social and professional engagement in the management of prospective, active, and alumni grantees. Worked closely with the founding Directors and fellow Program Officers on new program design, development, and evaluation. Coordinated, recruited, and trained community advisory committees specific to funding program goals. Continuously developed responsive citizen-led grantmaking programs that support creative approaches to grassroots civic engagement.

Provided for the day-to-day management and administration of The Sprout Fund’s flagship funding program, the Seed Award, and other catalytic grantmaking programs as the organization grew over time. Interfaced with all aspects of small-scale grantmaking at Sprout including prospective applicant outreach, cultivation, and support; frequent, recurring deadlines for application intake and processing; community-based decisionmaking engaging diverse representative advisory committees; ongoing portfolio management including site visits, financial reporting, and program evaluation.

Worked with leadership and teamwork-building skills to develop a cohesive staff for consistent customer service. Managed all aspects of cash-handling procedures. Served as an interim General Manager with a team during leadership transitions.

Taught Stories in Art program to 6-12 year-olds at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh branches. Created curriculum of neighborhood outreach project for Lincoln Elementary Students at Calvary Episcopal Church. Led interpretive tours of Museum collections. Collaborated with other educators to design and continue children’s art classes under the supervision of Wendy Osher and Marilyn Russell.

Oregon Coast

Researched the National Historic landmark 1894 Heceta Head Lighthouse and prepared presentations of its historical and current function for tour groups of 10-15 people. Supervised and directed the volunteer staff at the lighthouse in addition to submitting reports to assist in the future development of the program.
