As Staff Environmental Scientist, I contributed to various projects at Noblis, primarily dealing with remediation of difficult sites within the framework of CERCLA, RCRA, and other federal and state policies. I assisted with project management - developing a project timeline, ensuring deliverables are completed on time, assisting with the development of new procedures and processes, QA/QC of the various assignments, and meeting with the client as needed. I assisted with drafting, editing, and managing deliverables and monthly reports to our clients, which helped ensure projects remained on track. I helped prepare technical reports on topics ranging from vapor intrusion risk assessments to munitions waste remediation. I prepared and analyzed data ahead of complex site investigations with ArcGIS, Excel, Access, and additional tools like EPA's VISL. I researched and consolidated information regarding emerging contaminants (i.e: PFCs, PFOS, PFOA) to help ensure the Air Force adequately addresses new regulations. I also provided support to the DoD's SERDP-ESTCP programs.In addition to my technical and administrative contributions at Noblis, I assisted with the San Antonio office's summer internship program. This involved sending out calls for applications, reviewing them, selecting suitable candidates for interviews, and conducting interviews. I was also in charge of selecting topics, ranging from specific classes of contaminants to environmental regulations, the interns would be researching and discussing during daily meetings.

This fellowship funded my graduate studies. My research project focused on population genetics of the blue crab in three geographic regions: the Gulf of Mexico, the Chesapeake Bay, and southern Brazil. I used microsatellites, or short tandem repeats, as the genetic markers for this study. Nine species specific markers were developed by myself and others in the lab and an additional 7 previously developed markers were tested as well. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify each locus in conjunction with a third, fluorescently labeled universal primer, to allow for detection and size differentiation of alleles during genotyping. A total of 188 samples spanning the Gulf of Mexico and Chesapeake Bay were collected and tested. Additional datasets from the Lacerda et al 2016 project in the western south Atlantic were included in statistical analyses. I used various statistical methods to test for genetic differentiation between the geographic regions. These included principal component analyses, factorial correspondence analyses, analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), F-statistics, and k-means clustering analyses. The programs used to run these analyses included STRUCTURE, GenoDive, Genetix, and Genepop.

I provided support for a variety of projects. This ranged from data mining to researching methods in analytical chemistry for environmental forensics purposes. I helped prepare several technical reports that addressed various topics, from the regulatory concerns regarding specific remediation sites, such as MMRP sites, to the best methods for measuring plume behavior. I learned how to use Voxler and used my skills in GIS to help transform data to be used in Voxler.

I ran indirect and direct immunofluorescent antibody assays for diagnosis of veterinary diseases. I was trained on running assays and correctly identifying positive samples. During my time at TVMDL, I led a project on seroprevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in horses. I also contributed to data collection for studies on seroprevalence of Chagas disease in dogs in Texas.I was cross-trained on multiple techniques, including ELISAs and antigen agglutination tests. Multitasking was largely necessary, as was customer service and the ability to properly discuss results with clients.

I was trained in chemical methods of analyte detection in environmental samples and became proficient in Kjeldahl digestions, titrations, and ion chromatography.

I assisted with multiple research projects during my time at the Rosenthal lab. I initially studied fast-start swimming performance in the naturally hybridizing swordtail fishes and collected the morphometric data sets for this project. Additionally, I analyzed the impact of hybridization on morphological variation in swordtail fishes. I helped design animations for behavioral studies and assisted in pertinent techniques of fish care. As a research assistant, I attended laboratory meetings and read and revised papers prior to submission for publication. These practices were tremendously helpful as I wrote a proposal and completed my undergraduate research thesis. While working on my thesis, I also became familiar with the use of R and Matlab for data analysis.

I worked on projects centered on understanding the magnitude of biodiversity in the Coral Triangle. I became AAUS Scientific Diver certified and conducted field work by SCUBA, contributing to data collection of the Automated Reef Monitoring Systems in Bali. My project focused on the use of DNA barcoding to identify cryptic species of crabs in the Coral Triangle. While doing so, I learned how to properly preserve and photograph invertebrate specimens.

I conducted a population genetic analyses on depth-related population divergence in the deep-sea bivalve, Deminucula atacellana. The programs Arlequin and Structure were used to determine population genetic parameters and population structure. During the internship, I was trained in the use of restriction enzyme for DNA recombination, DNA extraction, PCR, and SDS-PAGE. I assisted with field research in the Gulf of Maine and was trained on the use of quadrats and transects for intertidal ecology data collection.
