Louis Stokes Alliance For Minority Participation Btd Fellow
This fellowship funded my graduate studies. My research project focused on population genetics of the blue crab in three geographic regions: the Gulf of Mexico, the Chesapeake Bay, and southern Brazil. I used microsatellites, or short tandem repeats, as the genetic markers for this study. Nine species specific markers were developed by myself and others in the lab and an additional 7 previously developed markers were tested as well. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify each locus in conjunction with a third, fluorescently labeled universal primer, to allow for detection and size differentiation of alleles during genotyping. A total of 188 samples spanning the Gulf of Mexico and Chesapeake Bay were collected and tested. Additional datasets from the Lacerda et al 2016 project in the western south Atlantic were included in statistical analyses. I used various statistical methods to test for genetic differentiation between the geographic regions. These included principal component analyses, factorial correspondence analyses, analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA), F-statistics, and k-means clustering analyses. The programs used to run these analyses included STRUCTURE, GenoDive, Genetix, and Genepop.

I provided support for a variety of projects. This ranged from data mining to researching methods in analytical chemistry for environmental forensics purposes. I helped prepare several technical reports that addressed various topics, from the regulatory concerns regarding specific remediation sites, such as MMRP sites, to the best methods for measuring plume behavior.
